Reflection

This class had many things to do so it was difficult. I'm not good at computer so making PowerPoint Slides and blog, putting manuscripts on my blog were hard for me.
Good points about this class are group members change everytime, do presentation before many classmates and I enjoyed other group's presentation. Group members change everytime so I could make friends with my classmates and do presentation before many classmates so I could get accustomed to doing presentation before many people.
Bad points about this class is it was short time to next presentation so connect PowerPoint Slides with group member was not easy. I wanted to check my manuscripts by teacher and correct them. I couldn't know grammar is correct or not.
Through this class, I could learn ability to write, read and do presentation. Use these ability,I want to continue studying English and improve them.

Power-Up Tutorial: Departmemt of British and American Studies

I will explain about freshman Power-Up Tutorial of department of British and American Studies.

In semester One, first, we have to settle into speaking English with natives because most people have learned English from Japanese teacher in high school and at once we learn essential classroom English and conversation skills. After building general foundation of useful English, we will learn to develop our conversation strategy skills which will enable us to participate in a broader variety of English speaking situations.

In semester Two we will read ‘Asahi Weekly’ every other week. By now, we will have the skills and confidence to express our opinions and discuss various real life issues with our classmates and teachers. We can know news in the world through reading ‘Asahi Weekly’ .

Customs (Cultural differences)

I will talk about two culture differences of public transport.
First, In Japan, we have to turn off our cell phone or put into silent mode and don’t talk by cell phone in a train because Japanese believe it is possible that a cell phone signal is an obstacle to medical equipment that implant in the body so even if you think this thing is not true, please turn off or put into silent mode your cell phone.

Second, we can hear a lot of announcements in trains and buses. Many buttons are placed in buses because most Japanese are ashamed to say “I want to get off next bus stop so please push a button.” in a crowded bus. Similarly, if we can hear a lot of announcements in trains, we don’t have to ask someone what is next station or where should we get off, and what’s more, we can know them with our eyes closed. Noisy announcements are effective in certain circumstances so listen carefully.

Räbechilbi Turnip Festival

We are going to talk about “Räbechilbi Turnip Festival” in Switzerland. I will talk about contents of the festival. Do you know turnips? It is a vegetable, the color is a round white or white and purple. Can you guess? In Japanese “Kabu”. This involves a lantern procession using turnips which have been hollowed out and decorated. It resembles Jack-o’-Lantern. The turnips are lit as night falls. But even before they are lit, they form part of shop displays. After that, the turnip parade is held.
